VILLAGE AND COMMUNITY

Participants construct a temporary village, servicing and providing for their individual and collective needs. Groups create their own shelter and share catering facilities.

The proposed Village will assume the form of a large circle. The outer ring will be reserved for themed campsites and the inner ring for Artwork placements. On the North, South, East and West quadrants there will be four large fire pits which will burn thru the night serving as community fires around which community activities take place.

  • There are no cash transactions, no market stands, no cash bars.
  • It is a gift economy. If you need something - ask for it. If you have it - gift it!
  • This is a LEAVE NO TRACE event - everything you bring in leaves with you when you leave.

Q | Can I reserve a campsite?

A | No. While there are clearly marked roads, there are no "camping sites" other than the spaces previously allotted for pre-placed theme camps and art installations. Those awarded placement have applied in advance. Come early if you need space to add friends.

Q | Is there a quiet place to camp?

A | Yes, the Southern part of the Village is the Quiet Zone - NO GENERATORS. NO SOUND SYSTEMS. NO CRYING BABIES AND PLEASE NO ANIMALS. Afrika Burns is alive 24 hours a day, and much of the activity takes place at night. We ask that each person respect their neighbour. We recommend you bring earplugs!

Q | I heard something about "low-density camping." What's that?

A | The area at the back of the village will be reserved for those who wish to camp without cars . This vehicle-free area will by default become low-density. No moving vehicles will be allowed in this area.

ENVIRONMENT

In homage to the 2007 BURNING MAN art theme – GREEN MAN, the first ever Afrika Burns provides a platform for participants to demonstrate resourceful ways of dealing with waste and conserving water; creating art and shelter from recycled materials; sharing energy efficient cooking methods [hot boxes]; employing solar and wind energy to power their camps; minimizing or better still eradicate litter!

Environmental experts are consulted to advise on the most ecologically sound approach to the site and respectful management of waste and resources.

CHILDREN

Afrika Burns is a family friendly event. The children’s camp is located on the map - If you are not a family friendly camp, please place yourself far away from it. All parents should attend to their children and are responsible for their safety and wellbeing at all times. Parents not behaving responsibly with regard to their children may be asked to leave the event. If you encounter a lost child, alert an Afrikan Ranger immediately. Always be respectful of children's personal space and their needs. Please be very clear about ticket pricing for children.
