There are a huge range of styles, genres as well as sizes of gigs at Burning Man. Of course this is a festival of radical self-expression, a blank canvass that you can put anything onto. So anything goes; from live funk, to break beats, to Sinatra, to acapella singing, to house, deep house, trance,  chanting, hell, it’s an opportunity to play only Johnny Cash for 48 hours non-stop if that’s what you’ve always wanted to do.

So if music is what you wish to contribute to the Afrika Burns community, this is your opportunity to put together that outlandish idea that you have had for a while, collaborate with people from other genres, disciplines…or just do what you love doing… For many years at Burning Man, Pepe Ozan staged a full scale opera in the middle of the desert on the Thursday night at 2a.m. But the lone violinist at on the edge of the desert is also pleasing entertainment.

We do not determine what is going to be played.  And no one genre of music dominates this festival.  We also don’t determine how it is going to be played.  One of the core principles of Afrika Burns is that of radical self-reliance, this means that unlike other events we are not providing large array of stages with a tight line-up of DJs and live performers with which to entertain you (just as we are not designing what art works occur at Afrika Burns).   This is not a centrally organized rock concert or night club..we urge you to try and hook up with other musicians to share equipment. Join up with people who are organizing a theme camp to provide a vibe, add music to other installations. Make a sound installation.

If you have an idea, you do not need approval from the Afrika Burns crew to go ahead with it, just go ahead.  We have a few rules (safety and respect of others), but not a lot.  And yes we would love hear about your intended project, try and help if we can, and post it on the website if you wouldn’t mind.  But by all means go forth and continue to organize. Don’t wait for us; make your idea, installation, party, performance happen.
