RADIO FREE KAROO

A radio station for the good people of Tankwa Town, Afrika Burns - Radio Free Karoo is able to transmit up to 50 km from Tankwa Town and will be on the air from 22 Nov till midnight November 25. Programming will feature music, interviews and serve as a portal for information at Afrika Burns. Look for signs giving the frequency. Tune into "Radio Free Karoo".

SAN CLAN - Gerald Geldenhuis, Uys Van der Merwe and Jonah Delange, Lisa van der Merwe. As the centre piece of out new community and tribe, the San Clan shows a group working together…many heads, many legs…one body. It will burn on Saturday the 24th at 10pm.

Primal reverent man stopped beneath the benevolent tree, so karma-free. And felt the infinite mystery, close at hand, yet deeply hidden, intimately entwined with us. And this is the primal temple…. before art and architecture. More space than structure. Re-incarnated debris.
See what our hands have wrought. Make your pilgrimage to the memorial temple and bring your offering to the sacred fire.

We see her big - lying across the landscape, and hollow - she can be entered through an orifice - her mouth, vagina, ears, eyes or more than one or all .. I imagine at this stage .. she is lit from within by candles. And burnt, yes definitely.

Also known as the Tumblweed or a candelabra flower…it rolls around spreading it seed…. Its about playful randomness… going whichever way the wind blows you….and its just pretty….

THE 12TH KEY - Paul Jorgensen, Corbett Griffiths, Charles Palmer and Joe Martin
The 12th key addresses the misrepresentation of, and misunderstanding within the memes that we as people hold as true and factual. Growing up in SA in the 70’s, I was a slave to the radio the news that was broadcast throughout our country about our government and its laws and its policies. This was relayed throughout the country by the Hillbrow tower. The inverted cross is an esoteric symbol of reversal and is related to the 12th key of the Tarot. The hanged man. TRIPLE BYPASS - Charlie Smith, Jaime Ladet
An experiment in sharing and exploring art to build community through object. A 12’ to 16’ tall fire vessel constructed from a steel armature, and skinned with pieces of steel that have been scribed with symbols created by participants – this project is intended to be built by the community for the community. The aim is to create an Art Sculpture that will resonate with the people.

A giant voluptuous female figure (earth goddess, mother, tart, slag ... whatever, but definitely not a virgin) made out of wire mesh, mud and unmentionable bodily secretions, with a long flowing skirt which is imbedded with found objects symbolizing various obscure things about girl/womanhood. Like most women, she carries her flame within.

JONS DANCE - Mike Hayward, the Metal Heads and anyone whose life was touched by Jon Gong
A tribute to Jon Gong Alessandri, grand master of the smithy community. His heart wanted to be at Afrika Burns, so he will be represented, remembered and celebrated through a piece designed by Mike Hayward and built by whomever knew him and wanted to join. A flock of 59 birds to represent his flighty spirit and each year of his life, the central circle represents the gong. His gong, Sangoma, will be in the middle and his group the Gratuitous Noise Ensemble will play.

CAMP NEON NOMADS BEAMING BEDOUIN
Afrika Burns in the Karoo desert and nomads are hospitable to travellers and seekers in the desert. ….A neon Bedouin rest camp with hubbly-bubblies, mint tea, Turkish coffee, Persian type carpets and cushions. This is a place to chill, enjoy some mint tea or jiggle to some Bedouin beats en route to the journey. All participants dressed in the nomad theme but with neon colours. Ra, ra! Expect a selection of trippy middle-eastern music!

CAMP COUCHSURFING
Local, international, and even virtual CouchSurfers will be welcomed by a warm umZansi Africa greeting with a generous serving of mqombothi, traditional South African homemade beer. Soulfood4U together with others promises to take turns to “tuck you in” on the couch. Those who drop by will be invited to join the CS Theme Camp by completing a “membership form” committing them under oath stating in writing a way that they intend “creating a pathway” to the “Rainbow Nation”.

CAMP WHACKY WISH AND MESSAGE CENTRE
At the Wacky Wild Wish Message Centre you can send post cards, make a wish or just have fun! Come and listen to some cool tunes while you write a postcard home and mail it in the giant REAL Mail letter box (we even have a limited number of stamped postcards) and so we’ll make sure your message is sent (for real)! Or mail your secret wishes in the Burning Mail post box which will be burnt at the end of the festival at the Temple! Share in the fun on Saturday when you write your wishes on a balloon, which will fly high above the playground all day! Need to leave friends a message? Use our giant size message board to post messages for friends or collect messages from!

A group of twenty with visions aplenty. LumaLab - light and experimental, a mixing of the illuminated media and the playful arts. Homer Ludens meets Homey Lumens in the Karoo at the foot of a recycled plastic baobab springing from the ancient shale beds. A giant extinct elephant bird leads its rider out across the playa, archetypal giants appear. Large wheels spiral slowly in the growing dusk, a dakini spins a giant hoola hoop of flame, the shadows dance and the LumaLab dub tendencies will out. A strange attractor, free radical photons, light entertainment, shadowy projections, luminous darkness, sonically sympathetic dj's (muzak), spontaneous performance combustions - please don't trip the lights! fantastic! Isa and Paul will be opening the bar every evening at the Luma Lab for thirst quenching Sundowner Sangrias. Please bring your own glass - early arrivals get bonus peanuts. No under 18s, no firearms, no poodles. Drugs (supposedly) also not allowed. Please note that this is a Portuguese and not a Spanish sangria mix. No returns will be accepted or discussion entered into. The organizers reserve the right to ration the last 2 litres! We will have a big medicine wheel in the middle of which there is a fire
continuously burning. We will join together for about an hour's council circle (whoever wants to) each day, and each offering whatever we want to, when we want to...offering ceremonies, Mayan readings, earth teachings and medicine wheels (including the Tzolkin).

CAMP VUVUZELA AND THE VOOVOO ART CAR

You’re invited to join the Voovooians at Camp Vuvuzela! A fabulous lounge, bar, film and dance destination will be provided for celebrating the African soccer trumpet, mingling and partying. Happy, quirky, funky, cheesy, eclectic, electronic tunes and live music will be “trumpeted” by DJ’s, live musicians and performers day and night. When not in camp, Voovoovians may be found ‘cruising’ the Binnekring on their mobile-music-platform-art-car and art-car-bar or chilling at their inflatable deep desert cinema.

An interactive camp with a working forge where visitors are invited to forge metal leaves that make up a sculptural tree; a sunset performance by the Gratuitous Noise Ensemble in homage to the memory of Jon Alessandri; sculptures by Etienne de Kock, Conrad Hicks and Michael Hayward and a few anvils being blown after dark!

RETYRED…. a huge car tyre installation from 1000 car tyres. Among other things we will be making a structure in which our team will work, live and sleep. We like to invite the participants to be part of our installation, it can become a hangout place, a place with a spirit different than anything else. Many other functional sculptures will define our area. And we have an idea to spread out our feeling by adding car tyre objects to different other places at Afrika Burns.
