Volunteering is a key form of participation.  Because Afrika Burns is a fully participant funded and not-for-profit event, volunteering is not necessarily associated with any material reward or free tickets.  This because ticket sales for Afrika Burns is our primary source of revenue, which will pay for fixed costs of the event, (such as porta loos, fencing, land, emergency services etc.).

VolunteersHowever it is an awesome way to participate in the community. Volunteer positions/roles vary in commitment: some people will work anything from a few months to a couple of hours, pre- during- and post the event.  The most important thing to know is that YOU DECIDE how much time you want to volunteer

  • You can volunteer for more than one department or portfolio
  • You can volunteer if you haven’t been to any pre-event meetings
  • Try not to commit to something that you will not do or follow through on
  • If you sign up for a shift please show up for it

Here is a broad outline of the areas that we will need help with:

  • Department of Public Works Oversees the construction of all key infrastructure that makes Afrika Burns happen, practical skills will come in very handy.
  • Labour on art installations. Many large scale art installations need many hands to help them.
  • Gate duty and Greeters The gate is the first impression that people get of Afrika Burns, the greeters are the welcoming committee with infectious exuberance, sometime wearing only a smile and nothing else, they there to orientate and educate each and every person driving through the gates of Afrika Burns.
  • Rangers are non-confrontational community mediators, there to promote awareness of potential hazards, ranging from sunburn to tent fires and lots of other stuff in between. Please note they are NOT police but interactive participants of the community. To be a ranger a sense of humour and flexibility will be a great asset
  • MOOP(matter out of place) to aid in the ideal of leaving no trace, this is the cleanup crew who will trawl the landscape for all those last lost bits of false eyelash/sequin/fake fur that got blown away in the wind during the event

TO VOLUNTEER please email Debbie & Jenny volunteer@afrikaburns.com and write “volunteer” in the title.
Please give us an indication of the following in your email:

  • Your name, contacts (email and telephone number) and what city you live in.
  • What kind of time commitment you are interested in making and when.  (Example: before the event, limited, extensive, at the event, daytime/night time, after the event, at the venue/in Cape Town.)
  • Give us an idea of your skills, absolutely anything will do, whether you are very practical or not, the weirdest skills might find a home at Afrika Burns
  • Give us an indication of your team interests.
  • Anything about yourself that you wish to tell us.

Thank you for your support, Afrika Burns would not happen without it!
